Our Speaker

Diane W. Shannon, MD, MPH, PCC
After experiencing burnout as a young primary care physician, Dr. Diane Shannon chose to leave practice and pursue a career in writing. Her focus for 20 years was drawing attention to ways to address clinician burnout, system inefficiency, and patient safety problems. She is co-author of the 2016 book, Preventing Physician Burnout: Curing the Chaos and Returning Joy to the Practice of Medicine.

Dr. Shannon’s personal experience with burnout and her desire to support physicians motivated her to become a certified coach in 2019. She is a seasoned professional coach who has worked with hundreds of clinicians at the frontlines of care and in leadership to balance career advancement and impact with career sustainability and wellness. Her podcast, Vital Signs: Thriving as a Woman in Medicine, launched in January 2024. In addition, she continues to advocate for clinician wellness through writing and speaking.

Dr. Shannon received her medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University, and her master’s in public health from Harvard University. She completed training in an internal medicine residency program at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center and practiced primary care in Boston. She is an ICF-certified coach at the PCC level and has a faculty appointment at the Gestalt International Study Center.

In her spare time, she enjoys conversing with her three young adult children, traveling with her architect husband, and learning how to surf.
